Position summary

The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for coordinating safety systems and to identify inherent risks and make recommendations to ensure compliance. They also coordinate site safety Inspections at branches and jobsites.

 

Job requirements

  • Coordinate and deliver comprehensive new worker orientations, including onboarding and mandatory training.
  • Facilitate in-person and virtual Health & Safety training sessions (WHMIS, TDG, Forklift certification, etc.).
  • Conduct Health & Safety inspections at branch locations, job sites, and on Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) compliance, documenting findings and reporting required corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with the H&S Manager on worksite accident investigations, gathering facts and evidence to conduct root cause analyses.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of the Health & Safety policy across all levels of the organization.
  • Provide guidance and support to managers in maintaining safety systems, ensuring compliance and best practices.
  • Complete regular inspections and audits to evaluate the effectiveness of Health & Safety systems and procedures; identify potential risks and recommend necessary improvements. 

 

Qualifications

  • Experience: Proven track record within operations, logistics, or a similar role, ideally with experience managing safety protocols or compliance measures such as WHMIS, TDG, or equipment handling (forklift, etc.).
  • Training Capability: Ability to train others, including new hires, on Health & Safety procedures and standards.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly for documenting and reporting findings.
  • Problem Solving: Analytical skills to assist with root cause analysis and propose preventive actions.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to identify potential safety hazards and ensure corrective actions are taken.
  • Confidentiality: Able to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Travel: Ability to travel to various work locations as required.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and email communication.
  • Basic H&S Knowledge: Familiarity with Health & Safety policies, standards, and regulations, though formal certification is not required (on-the-job training will be provided).
  • Collaborative: Able to work closely with cross-functional teams, particularly in operations and management.
